The study, conducted by scientists from UNLVs Nevada Institute of Personalised Medicine (NIPM), studied the association between 10 different types of bacteria in the human gut which could affect the level of developing Alzheimers disease. The results were published in the Nature Journal Scientific Reports.

Six types of bacteria have been identified as protective — Adlercreutzia, Eubacterium nodatum group, Eisenbergiella, Eubacterium fissicatena group, Gordonibacter, and Prevotella9 — and four types namely Bacteroides, Collinsella, Lachnospira, and Veillonella have been identified as risk factors for Alzheimers disease.

Experts are of the view that most of the microorganisms in the human intestine are considered healthy bacteria that support health, but an imbalance of those bacteria can be hazardous to a persons immune system and associated with numerous ailments such as depression, heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimers disease. The genes not only determine whether a person is susceptible to different sickness, but they may also influence the quantity of bacteria in the gut.

Certain bacteria in humans guts have the ability to secrete acids and toxins that could permeate the intestinal lining, interact with the APOE gene, and cause a neuroinflammatory response that affects brain health and numerous immune functions while potentially promoting the development of the neurodegenerative disorder.

The findings provide light on the connection between gut microbiota and the worlds most common type of dementia. More study is needed to hone in on the exact bacterial species that impact risk or protection, and it is also important to note that a variety of variables, including lifestyle and nutrition, regulate the gut biome.
